The Bengaluru police on May 27 arrested five people in connection with a case of alleged rape and torture of a woman in Ramamurthy Nagar.
The arrests were made hours after Assam Police shared the pictures of the five suspects on May 26 after the footage of the gang rape and assault went viral in northeast India. They had even guaranteed a prize to anyone who might help solve the crime.
“As per the information revealed so far, all of them are part of the same group and believed to be from Bangladesh. Due to financial differences, the culprits brutalised the victim, who is also said to be a Bangladeshi and was brought to India for human trafficking,” a senior police official said.
“Based on a video clip, wherein one woman was subjected to physical abuse and tortured by a group of people, five culprits including a woman, visible in the clip were immediately traced and secured by Bengaluru City Police,” a statement by Bengaluru Police read.
On the basis of the contents of the video clip and facts as disclosed during preliminary interrogation of the secured persons, a case of rape, assault and under other relevant provisions of law has been registered against the accused in Ramamurthy Nagar Police Station.
“According to the information given by the accused, there are other few people involved in this case and they are in neighbouring Kerala. We will arrest them soon and a team is formed to investigate this incident which is supervised by the Bengaluru city police commissioner”.the statement added.
