The nominees in various categories for the 25th Satellite Awards have been announced by The International Press Academy. And director Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Jallikattu is among the nine shortlisted movies in the Motion Picture, International category.
The Malayalam action-thriller has been nominated along with Danish film Another Round, Finnish film Tove, Taiwanese drama A Sun, French film Two of Us, Spanish musical drama I’m No Longer Here, Ukrainian Dystopian film Atlantis, Swiss drama My Little Sister and Guatemalan supernatural horror La Llorona.
JalliKattu is an independent action film directed by Ligo Jose Pellissery and the screenplay is written by S Hareesh and R Jayakumar. The film stars Antony Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose, Sabumon Abdusamad and Santhy Balachandran. The plot follows a bull that escapes from a slaughterhouse in a hilly remote village and the entire village men gather to hunt down the animal.
Jallikattu was premiered on September 6, 2019 at the Toronto International Film Festival and received widespread critical acclaim. The film was showcased at the 24th Busan International Film Festival under the section ‘A window on Asian Cinema’. On October 4, 2019 it was released in the home state Kerala. Among 27 other films, it was selected as the Indian entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards. After Guru and Adaminte Makan Abu, it is the third Malayalam film to be chosen as India’s official entry to the Oscars.
The nomination assumes significance as Jallikattu is also contesting for an Oscar nod.
Talking about the Academy Awards, Jallikattu has made it to the list of 93 films eligible for consideration in the International Feature Film category. The final list of nominees (comprising 15 films) for the category will be revealed on February 9.
