The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), approved Rapid Antigen Kits for conducting Covid test at home and said that the home usage of the kit is advisable only on symptomatic individuals and immediate contacts of coronavirus-positive patients confirmed by laboratories. The CoviSelfTM (PathoCatch) COVID-19 OTC Antigen LF device was created by the Pune-based Mylab Discovery Solutions Ltd.
“All individuals who test positive may be considered as true positives and no repeat testing is required… All symptomatic individuals who test negative by RAT should get themselves immediately tested by RTPCR,” the ICMR said.
Rapid antigen tests are considered less sensitive than lab-based RT-PCR tests. This means that some results from the RAT may show false negatives.
The ICMR asked users to download the home testing mobile application available on Google Play Store and Apple store. “The mobile app is a comprehensive guide of the testing procedure and will provide a positive or negative test result to the patient,” it said. “All users are advised to click a picture of the test strip after completing the test procedure with the same mobile phone, which has been used for downloading the mobile app and user registration.”
The research body also asked residents to take the test according to the process detailed in an app and strictly follow the guidelines on the disposal of the kits.
The country logged 2.67 lakh new cases on May 19, taking the overall count to 2.54 crore and the number of active cases to 1,27,046.
