While the recent heavy snowfall in Kashmir Valley has barred public movement, it has also propelled many to bring their creative selves out.
Throwing open the ‘white surface’ as a platform to the budding artisans, the department of tourism is conducting a four-day snow sculpture competition in the famous skiing resort of Gulmarg.
At least 30 participants from across the Valley, both amateur and professional sculptures, are taking part in the event. The department received overwhelming response from participants who have been shortlisted for the competition, the spokesman added.
Nisar Ahmad Wani, director of tourism, flagged off the event on Wednesday. The competition will be held in teams as well as on individual basis. They will carve the unique artworks depicting Kashmir’s culture, heritage, life and nature.
The move aims at attracting tourists during winter months on a large-scale.
Earlier this month, the J&K Sports Council and Ministry of Youth Services and Sports had announced that The Winter Games organised by the Winter Games Association of J&K will be held on February 11. The event is expected to last for four to five days.
The games will see various sports including skiing, snowboarding, snowshoe, ice stock, ice hockey, ice-skating and ski-mountaineering.
