Eleven people died and eight others fell seriously ill after consuming spurious liquor in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday. The deceased belong to two villages — Manpur and Pahawali– nearly 14 km from the district headquarters.
While four people lost their lives in Pahawali village, seven died in Manpur. Eight others are said to be in critical condition.
The villagers consumed a white-coloured liquor and an autopsy report is underway to ascertain the nature and extent of poison content in the liquor.
“The post-mortem is underway and whether the liquor was poisonous or not will be ascertained after the autopsy reports come,” an official said.
Home minister Narottam Mishra said the accused won’t be spared. “I am deeply saddened by this. The SHO has been suspended immediately. Senior officials have reached the site. A team will investigate the matter. Accused won’t be spared,” Mishra was quoted as saying.
According to police, the liquor was locally made and sourced. The people started vomiting late in the night after consuming it, following which they were taken to hospital. While 10 people died while on way to the hospital, one died at the hospital in Morena.
The relatives of the dead created a ruckus at the Morena district hospital where the post-mortem of the dead was being conducted.
“The relatives are demanding to take the bodies by a tractor while the administration is insisting that they take the bodies by ambulance,” police said.
The exact source of the spurious liquor has not been found.
