The Trinamool Congress has promoted Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee to the position of General Secretary, according to a statement released Saturday after senior officials of Bengal’s ruling party meeting in Kolkata for the first time since their landslide victory against the BJP in the April-May poll.
MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has been named President of the party’s women’s wing, and actor Saayoni Ghosh, who ran unsuccessfully in last month’s election, has been named President of the youth wing. Mr Banerjee, who formerly oversaw the party’s youth wing, will now step aside, as part of the party’s “one person, one position formula,” according to senior official Partha Chatterjee.
Sudip Bandyopadhyay and Derek O’Brien have been retained as the party’s parliamentary leaders. Another resolution made at today’s meeting was to prohibit ministers’ automobiles from having red beacons. The party’s plan for upcoming bypolls, including the election to the Bhabanipur seat in Kolkata, where Ms Banerjee is set to run, was also discussed at today’s meeting.
The meeting today also discussed measures to oppose the BJP’s “vendetta politics,” a reference to recent outbursts of violence and accusing words between the two parties.
The BJP is trying to “needle the democratically elected” Mamata Banerjee government, according to a senior Trinamool leader who spoke to PTI on Friday.
