Arsenal defeated Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday to prevent the hosts from going up to third place in the Premier League. Emile Smith Rowe scored the winner after a defensive blunder.
Jorginho’s attempted back pass forced out-of-position goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to dive to palm the ball away just before it crossed the line, preventing an own goal.
Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, on the other hand, was on hand to catch the ball and square it for Smith Rowe, who scored just inside the post. It was Arsenal’s third straight Premier League win, and a much-needed morale boost after the Gunners were eliminated from the Champions League after losing in the Europa League semifinals.
Chelsea’s defeat keeps Thomas Tuchel’s side in fourth place, giving West Ham and Liverpool renewed hope of overtaking Chelsea for the final Champions League spot.
