With the students of Rajah Muthiah Medical College relentlessly protesting against the exorbitant fee for 50 days now, the government of Tamil Nadu has issued an order claiming to over take the college under the State Department for Health and Family Welfare.
RMMC, previously affiliated to the Annamalai University, will now be managed and affiliated to the Dr MGR Medical University.
Rani Meyyammai College of Nursing and Rajah Muthiah Dental College and Hospital, both part of RMMC will also be overtaken by the government.
The transfer assumes significance as the college students have been on sit-in protest, demanding reduction in fees. The students have claimed that RMMC fees are more than that of other government colleges.
As even college authorities have shut the college and asked the students to vacate the campus, the demonstrators have been adamant with some even making a makeshift kitchens to feed their peers taking part in the protest.
The transfer was affected based on the announcement made by Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam in his budget speech last year, in which he said that this college will be taken over by the government and will be known as the Government Medical College, Cuddalore.
The property on which the college is located and its premises are worth Rs 249.99 crore. The institution has 332 teaching staff and 1,426 non-teaching staff members. The total of 2,293 have been enrolled in the college, as per the current academic year.
The Health and Family Welfare Department will issue an order on the status of the staff, seats, the fee structure of the college, and its affiliation to Dr MGR Medical University.
