The lecturer-couple accused of killing their two daughters were shifted from Madanapalle sub-jail in Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh to state-run mental hospital in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.
The couple, V Purushotham Naidu and Padmaja, had killed their daughters using dumbbells a few days ago.
Government psychiatrists at Madanapalle and SVRR government hospital in Tirupati said the couple was suffering from delusions and needed a complete analysis of their mental state in the presence of a psychologist. They also advised that the couple needed the care of a custodian.
Following the advice of the psychiatrists, the sub-jail authorities made arrangements to shift Naidu and Padmaja to Visakhapatnam in a police van guarded by armed reserve cops on Wednesday. The couple will be admitted to the mental health hospital in Visakhapatnam on Thursday.
While Purushotham is an associate professor of chemistry at government degree college for women in Madanapalle, Padmaja runs a private coaching institute for IIT aspirants.
The victims have been identified as Alekya (27) and Sai Divya (22). Alekya had completed her MBA from Indian Institute of Forest Management in Bhopal and was preparing for civil services. Younger daughter Sai Divya had completed her BBA and was learning music. The daughters had come home during the Covid-19 lockdown and stayed back.
