The West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday apologised to Bengali actor Saayoni Ghosh on behalf of party parliamentarian Saumitra Khan, who had passed an outrageous comment on the film artiste.
Last Wednesday, Saumitra had used the word ‘sex worker’ to attack actress Saayoni Ghosh. The controversy started as soon as the news came out. Saayoni had also protested on social media.
Later on Friday, state BJP spokesperson Shamik Bhattacharya told a press conference: “The BJP does not support such remarks. The team that said that was wrong. On behalf of the party, I apologize to those who have been insulted for this. At the same time, I apologize to the people of the state for this comment. ” Shamik also claimed that it was not the ‘language’ of the BJP.
Saayoni also welcomed the BJP’s apology. She told Anandabazar Digital, “What the BJP leaders did proved to be a genius. That is, no one becomes small just by asking for forgiveness. This is still true today. “
Recently, BJP leader Tathagata Roy was in dispute with Saayoni. Among them, Saumitra was vocal against the ‘opposition voice’ of Tolly Para while addressing a meeting of Khandaghosh in East Burdwan on Wednesday. The Bishnupur MP said, “There are some film artists in South Kolkata who only get a salary of Rs 2 lakh from Mamata Banerjee. They say that Shiva should be worshiped by wearing a condom in the Shivling in the Shiva temple. Saini Ghosh has called Goddess Saraswati a sex worker. Those who insult Shivling or mother Manasa are actually sex workers. ‘
