With the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation elections fast approaching in Telangana, a war of words over biryani has erupted between different political parties that are campaigning on a war-footing.
A day after AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi asked the BJP to try some beef biryani as they were “frustrated”, the saffron party hit back at the Hyderabad MP. BJP leader Raja Singh retorted to Owaisi’s comments and said the latter should instead try pork biryani.
Attacking Owaisi, Singh in a video message said: “I am offering biryani today. In my locality, the Valmiki community makes good biryani with pork. If you are fond of eating biryani, come I will offer a delicious biryani.”
He said Owaisi’s comments were an indication of his frustration even as he accused the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi and the AIMIM of pocketing money that was allocated to the state as part of flood relief.
The AIMIM leader had made the “beef biryani” statement while addressing a public rally in Azampura on Monday. He had said: “BJP people are suffering from frustration. They are not understanding anything. They should definitely have some biryani from Alhamdulillah (hotel).”
The hotel is known across Hyderabad for making beef dishes.
Hindus consider cows as holy and hence its meat is banned. Muslims, on the other hand, consider pig as impure and pork as haram.
The GHMC council elections are scheduled for December 1, with as many as 1,825 candidates in fray.
