Covishield is being manufactured by SII under an agreement with Oxford-AstraZeneca.
Claiming by 2024 every Indian will be vaccinated, Poonawala announced at the HT Leadership Summit 2020: “It will probably take two or three years for every Indian to get inoculated, not just because of the supply constraints but because you need the budget, the vaccine, logistics, infrastructure.”
He further added SII had plans to roll out 100 million doses of Covishield by February next year. Talking on the efficacy of the vaccine shot, he ruled out any major complaints, reactions or adverse events.
SII is also mulling over applying to India’s top drug regulator next month for emergency approval.
Even as SII is gearing up for the production of a safe and effective vaccine, it said children will have to wait longer to be immunised.
Poonawala said: “Unlike measles pneumonia, which is deadly, this disease is seeming to be less of a nuisance for children but then, they can be carriers and can give the infection to others.”
He also confirmed India will be prioritised for the vaccine distribution and added SII has not entered into any agreement with other countries, except Bangladesh.
