Just when the agitation over the three contentious farm acts was gaining momentum, the protesting ‘farmers’ have dilutated their agenda by demanding release of “urban naxals” and riot accused Islamists.
The protest which started to showcase grievance against the farm laws has now taken a dangerous turn. The squatters are now demanding the release of terrorist sympathisers such as Gautam Navlakha, Sudha Bhardwaj and Delhi riot accused such as Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam.
Jhanda Singh Jethuke, senior vice-president of BKU said, “We will celebrate International Human Rights Day at Baba Banda Singh Nagar, near Tikri border, to raise our voices for the release of intellectuals and human rights activists. Demand for the release of these prisoners has been raised constantly throughout the agitation.”
Expressing his disapproval for the ruling BJP, he added, “Modi government is running a Fascist agenda. On one hand it is promoting Adani and Ambani and on the other hand it is pushing intellectuals and activities into jail. Around two dozen activists have been booked under UAPA for Bhima Koregaon and instigating Delhi riots.”
Reports suggest that pictures of more than 20 accused will be installed on a stage near the Tikri border. Many “human rights groups” are also expected to participate.
The changing agendas of the protest and the continuous threats to “intensify” stir nationwide hint towards the incubation of a hidden and most probably, bigger propaganda.
