The much talked about web series ‘Tandav’ has danced up a storm yet again as controversies about the content are not ending.
An FIR was filed against the maker Ali Abbas Zafar, writer Gaurav Solanki, head of India original content-Amazon Aparna Purohit, Himanshu Krishna Mehra, the producer, stars Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia and others at Lucknow’s Hazratganj police station on Sunday night.
The FIR raises protestation to a scene that appears in the 17th minute of the first episode of the series. “Hindu gods and goddesses have been presented in an extremely vitriolic form; they are shown speaking in an extremely undignified manner and extremely poor-quality language has been used, which is to incite religious sentiments,” states the complaint.
The FIR also questions the dialogues delivered in the 22nd minute in the same episode that violates caste equality and can be a cause of unrest. The series has also garnered negative criticism for showing the prime minister’s office in poor light. But, this is not all as Tandav is also said to have insulted the status of women and creating caste divide.
“The web series is promoting caste animosity,” says the complaint filed by one Amar Nath Yadav. The sections mentioned in the FIR are 153-A, 295, 505(1)(b), 505(2) and 469 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860. Sections 66, 66F and 67 of the Information Technology Act have also been applied.
BJP’s MLA Ram Kadam had also filed a complaint at Ghatkopar police station in Mumbai against the series for insulting Hindu gods. He had said, “Strict action should be taken against the actor, director and producer of the web series.”
Another party MP, Manoj Kotak, wrote to Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar, requesting a ban on Tandav.
Tandav had opened to mixed reviews and social media and calls to ban the series on social media have been trending with #BanTandavNow and #BoycottBollywood.
