Maria Chindamo, a 42-year-old business woman disappeared without a trace on May 26, 2016 following her refusal to give up her land to her neighbour in Calabria region.
She disappeared from her farm in Limbadi municipality, near Calabria’s western coast.
Her neighbour is said to have ties with the notorious ‘Ndrangheta’ mafia, who the authorities are now looking into.
A former member of this mafia, Antonio Cossidente, is now working closely with the authorities. He said that the Ndrangheta mafia has considerable influence in the region in which this incident took place and named them as the perpetrators of the crime, according to Il Vibonese, a regional news website.
Cossident said that he got this information from Emanuele Mancuso, a fellow ex-member of the same mafia who he had come across in jail. Cossident says that it was Mancuso who told him about the victim being fed to the pigs.
The Italian media reported that the anti mafia police are going to further investigate Cossident’s allegations. Complicating the investigation is the fact that the victim Maria Chindamo’s husband had killed himself only a year before her disappearance.
