Hours before Narendra Modi is scheduled to unveil a life-size statue of Swami Vivekananda at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi, a controversy has hit the campus.
Student groups in JNU are prepared to protest against the programme on social media. Student and Congress member Sunny Dhiman had even posted a video on Monday trying to influence the students.
A poster released by the JNU Students Union calls for the Prime Minister to “go back” and demands “answers” from the ministry of education.
It said the protest gathering was against “the anti-education and anti-student Modi government”.
JNUSU has also called for a protest gathering at the varsity’s North Gate at 5pm today, hours before the scheduled event at 6.30pm.
Students have been constantly attacking the varsity administration over the statue construction, calling it a waste of money.
The statue is 11.5ft in length and stands on a 3ft-high platform.
Dhiman told Times Now: “Finally, Mr Modi is going to visit JNU (virtually). The BJP and the RSS hate JNU and colour it as anti-national, tukde tukde gang leader. In October 2016, we had burnt PM Modi’s effigy. Today, all over India, farmers are burning his effigy. It would be the greatest disservice to the soul of Swami Vivekananda if PM Modi fails to address the problems of farmers.”
