Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to meet West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee at Kalaikunda Air Base in Paschim Medinipur on May 28, the two will be taking separate aerial surveys of the areas affected by cyclone Yaas.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi is coming here after conducting a survey of cyclone-affected areas in Odisha. He will reach Kalaikunda via Digha, and take his flight to Delhi from there. We will have a short review meeting on cyclone Yaas at Kalaikunda,” Mamata Banerjee told the media.
PM Modi will first land in Bhubaneswar where he will hold a review meeting. Then he will proceed for an aerial survey in affected areas of Balasore, Bhadrak and Purba Medinipur. Following this, PM Modi will take part in a review meeting in West Bengal.
This would be the first physical meeting between PM Modi and Mamata Banerjee after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) returned to power.
“The meeting would be held at Kalaikunda airbase of the Air Force in West Midnapore. It is scheduled around 2.15 pm-2.30 pm,” said a bureaucrat.
According to a bureaucrat, “Around three lakh [30,00,00] houses have been damaged while 1.16 lakh hectares of croplands have been destroyed after saline water from the rivers and sea gushed into the villages through breaches in the embankments and over them.”
