Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft and a billionaire, and his philanthropist wife Melinda Gates declared their divorce earlier this month. The breakup of one of the world’s wealthiest and most influential couples has sparked speculation about what could have prompted them to do so.
The world-famous tech pioneer’s questionable behaviour in work-related settings, highlighted by several leading newspapers in their reports is assumed to be the reason for their divorce.
The New York Times confirmed that Bill Gates pursued women who worked for him at Microsoft and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on many occasions, citing people familiar with the situation.
Michael Larson, the billionaire’s former wealth manager, was accused of sexual assault in 2018. Melinda Gates requested an independent investigation, although Bill Gates insisted on an internal resolution. According to the New York Times, Melinda Gates was dissatisfied with her husband’s treatment of the situation at the conclusion of the investigation. Michael Larson is still employed by Gates.
According to Frank X Shaw, a Microsoft spokesperson, the following year, Microsoft’s board of directors, of which Bill Gates was a member, launched an investigation into a case after learning that their co-founder had “sought to pursue a romantic relationship with a company employee in the year 2000.”
The Wall Street Journal reported on the incident. Bill Gates resigned from Microsoft’s board of directors in 2020. However, Bill Gates’ spokesperson, Bridgitt Arnold, said the affair happened 20 years ago and ended ‘amicably.’ “Gates’ decision to step down from the board had nothing to do with this,” she said.
