The police in central Assam’s Hojai district have arrested 24 people for assaulting a doctor at a COVID-19 Care Centre (CCC). The incident happened on June 2 at Udali in Hojai district.
A young doctor(Dr Seuj Kumar Senapati) was brutally beaten by a mob and relatives of a Covid-19 patient after the patient died had at Odali Covid-19 care centre .
“We are taking the physical assault incident on Dr. Senapati of Udali Hospital very seriously. He’s fighting the pandemic at the frontline, so any assault on him is like assaulting all the frontline workers,” State’s Director-General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said.
“Twenty four culprits involved in this barbaric attack have been arrested and a charge sheet will be filed at the earliest. I am personally monitoring this investigation and I promise that justice will be served [sic], Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted.
A video of the incident also went viral on social media where some people were seen attacking the young doctor and kicking him.
According to reports, Dr Kumar had reached Odali Model Hospital for his Covid-19 duty around 1:30 pm on June 1.
“The relatives of the patient complained that the patient’s condition was serious. When I saw the patient, I found that he had already died. The relatives then immediately vandalised the furniture at the hospital and attacked me,” Dr Seuj Kumar Senapati said.
The Assam Medical Service Association, which called for boycott of the OPD services, warned that if such an incident recurred in the future, it would cease all services across the state. The Association demanded security for all the hospitals.
“Assam Health Security Force should be raised immediately. As raising it will take time, we request for the immediate recruitment of temporary security personnel,” the Association said.
