Geeta, who was rescued from Pakistan and brought back to the country in 2015, has still not found her parents.
The deaf and mute woman was brought to India by the then external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj after being stranded in the neighbouring country for 15 years.
However, despite widespread coverage of her situation and her persistent efforts, she has failed to find any family members so far.
The 30-year-old recently visited the Godavari river at Basar in Telangana and looked along the banks to spot a temple she remembers from her childhood. She also walked into the town looking for a small hospital next to railway tracks. Yet, she found none.
Earlier, she had looked for the same things at Jalna, Lasur and Dhule in Maharashtra.
Since December 12, Geeta and three social workers have been going around the Maharashtra-Telangana border, even as a number of social organisations have come forward collectively to help her find her family.
They sleep in dharamshalas and gurdwaras, go to railway stations, meet local police to look into missing individuals’ information and stroll round city after city hoping Geeta would spot one landmark from her childhood.
NGO Anand Service Society in Indore is taking care of Geeta and is set to soon start a fresh search for her family.
Director Gyanendra Purohit, a sign language expert, said while communicating with Geeta they got some vital clues about her geographical background which indicated the region around Nanded in Maharashtra and Telangana.
Geeta was about 11 years of age when she inadvertently crossed the border into Pakistan in 2003. She was spotted by the Pakistan Rangers in Lahore and was handed over to the Edhi Foundation. Bilquis Edhi, who runs the foundation, named her Geeta.
Swaraj after getting her back to India in 2015 had even tried to play a matchmaker for Geeta and sought marriage proposals for the woman, whom she called India’s daughter.
Since 2018, Geeta has additionally been a part of a number of “swayamvars” on the lookout for a groom. But ultimately she chose to find her parents first.
Several couples stepped forward to claim Geeta was their daughter after Sushma appealed in a video for her mother and father to step ahead and in addition introduced Rs 1lakh money reward. However, none of them could substantiate their claim.
