Fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi has gone missing since May 23, his lawyer Vijay Aggarwal claimed early on May 25. His lawyer told the media that, “Mr Mehul Choksi is missing. His family members are worried and anxious and had called me to discuss. Antigua police are investigating. Family is in the dark and worried about his safety.”
According to reports, Choksi left his home last evening to go for dinner and was never seen again. His vehicle was discovered in Jolly Harbour later in the evening, but no sign of him.
Mr Choksi had secured the citizenship of Antigua and Barbuda in November 2017 under the aegis of the Citizenship by Investment Programme and fled there when the PNB scam matter came to light.
The police force which has launched a missing person operation issued a statement along with the photograph of the businessman seeking information from the public.
“The Police are investigating a Missing Person Report made of 62-year-old Mehul Choksi of Jolly Harbour. Mehul was reported missing on Sunday 23rd May 2021 at the Johnson Point Police Station,” the statement said.
Mehul Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are accused of allegedly perpetrating a bank fraud of Rs 13600 crore on Punjab National Bank (PNB) and he is being examined by the CBI and ED for his role in multi-crore PNB fraud.
Earlier in March, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had said businessmen Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi and Choksi are coming back to India to face the law.
Choksi have always claimed that he is innocent and all the allegations against him are false, baseless and motivated by political expediency.
