Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi Chief Minister and leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), pledged free electricity throughout Punjab if his party wins the Assembly elections next year. At a news conference in Chandigarh, Kejriwal stated that household consumers in Punjab will receive 300 free electricity units and that all outstanding electricity bills will be cancelled. “If elected, the AAP administration in Punjab will provide free power to every home in the state up to 300 units. Around 77 percent to 80 percent of Punjabis will have zero electricity electricity bill, he said. He also promised a 24×7 power supply in Punjab.
“In the whole country, Punjab has the most expensive electricity, despite it being a power-generating state,” he said. Kejriwal added that Punjab can have the lowest rates for electricity if the alleged nexus between the politicians and electric companies is broken.
He said that within 2.5 years of becoming Chief Minister, he had ensured a 24-hour electricity supply in Delhi by repairing transformers and wiring in every street, and that he would do the same in Punjab. “In Delhi, we distribute 200 units of energy free to every family,” Kejriwal had tweeted earlier on Monday. Women are ecstatic. The spike in prices has also had a negative impact on Punjabi women. The AAP government in Punjab would also provide free electricity. Let’s meet in Chandigarh tomorrow.”
The declaration, which he made on Twitter, comes amid efforts by the state’s ruling Congress party to provide 200 units of free energy to all households, a critical pledge made before the previous Assembly elections that the party’s high leadership now wants to be delivered in a timely way. Protests have erupted in both urban and rural regions as a result of the power outage. Employees of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) have been beaten by enraged farmers in numerous rural regions who have not received the promised eight-hour uninterrupted power supply for paddy sowing.
