Veteran Indian cricketer Suresh Raina had left many fans and franchise officials displeased with his decision to return home after arriving in the UAE for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Many also suspected that Raina’s decision might see the Yellow Army release him in the auction pool ahead of the IPL 2021 season but thanks to skipper MS Dhoni, the southpaw earned a new contract.
As per a report in InsideSport Moneyball, along with the new contract that fetches Raina Rs 11 crore for participation in the 14th edition of the league, the former India international has breached the INR 100 crore mark in earnings as an IPL player. He becomes only the fourth Indian batsman to get into triple-digits after CSK skipper Dhoni, Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli and Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma.
Most fans lamented the absence of Raina from IPL 2020 in UAE as the primary reason behind CSK’s inability to carve out wins. Yet, in terms of form, Raina hasn’t looked at his best in whatever cricket he has played since the IPL 2019 season. Returning to play professional cricket in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Uttar Pradesh, the veteran batsman only scored one fifty in 5 matches.
The form factor didn’t look in Raina’s favour but CSK still went on to retain him for another season, probably because of the experience and credibility he brings to the table.
Raina has been a CSK loyalist having represented the franchise since the T20 league’s inception in 2008. For two seasons, however, the left-handed batsman played for the Gujarat Lions as the Super Kings were suspended due to their involvement in the IPL betting scandal.
