Kerala is witnessing a sudden spurt in marriages for the past few days.
This comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposal to raise the legal age of marriage for women.
He had stated the need to reconsider and increase the age of marriage for women to 21.
A panel constituted by the women and child development ministry is examining the proposal.
Following the announcement, people have started plunging in ‘panic weddings’.
Many are even forgoing rituals otherwise considered sacrosanct.
Malappuram district coordinator of Childline Anwar Karakkadan called the panic ‘real’.
“Families are petrified that they would land in jail if they marry off a girl who is yet to turn 21,” he added.
Currently, the legal age of marriage for men is 21 and for women 18.
