The BJP has slammed the Congress for supporting the People’s Alliance of Gupkar Declaration, whose only agenda is to bring back Article 370 in the erstwhile state.
On Sunday, the Congress announced it would partner with the seven-party alliance to contest the upcoming District Development Council (DDC) elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The alliance, formed in August 2019, has been campaigning for the restoration of J&K’s special status.
The DDC, a new unit formed for governance of Jammu and Kashmir, has received over 350 nominations for 43 seats that are going for polls on November 28. The Gupkar Alliance views the polls as a referendum on last year’s abrogation of Article 370.
J&K Congress chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir met the leaders of the alliance at their chairman Farooq Abdullah’s residence on Sunday and discussed a seat-sharing pact in the poll-bound districts.
Following the development, the BJP slammed the party and demanded to know their stance on the contentious issue of abrogation of Article 370.
BJP spokesperson Patra said: “J&K Congress chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir said that Congress will contest with Gupkar. In their statement, Congress party said that they have joined the Gupkar alliance ‘to defeat those who have been forcefully implementing the laws in Indian territory’. What do they mean- the law was passed in the Parliament is forceful? They don’t believe what is being done in our Parliament?”
He also recalled how National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah and Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti had uttered anti-India statements in the past.
Continuing his scathing attack on the Congress leadership, he quoted RJD leader Shivanand Tiwari remarks: “Rahul Gandhi is NPPP-Non-performing Picnic-ing President. Rahul Gandhi when you were with cycle(SP) it was punctured, when you came together with lantern(RJD), it was extinguished.”
Lashing out at the PDP and the NC, Patra said: “Now let me remind you who are the other parties in the Gupkar Alliance — one whose party leader says they will bring back Article 370 with the help of China — that is Mr Farooq Abdullah. The other — PDP — its chief Mehbooba Mufti says that they will not hoist the Tiranga flag until Article 370 is restored…. These are Gupkar…. They are speaking on the lines of Pakistan. Pakistan reached the UN to oppose abrogation of Article 370, now they are also opposing, are they Gupkar or Guptchar”?
Praising the Narendra Modi government’s decision to repeal Article 370, he said: “It is a dream come true for the BJP and PM Narendra Modi as DDC elections are taking place in the Union Territory of J&K.”
