Samantha Akkineni will portray a suicide bomber in the second season of the Amazon Prime Video drama The Family, which was initially reported by Bollywood Hungama a few days ago. Following this revelation, a number of protests erupted, requesting for the play to be banned since it offended the Eelam Tamils as well as the people of Tamil Nadu. Mano Thangaraj, the Tamil Nadu Minister for Information and Broadcasting, had even written to Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Prakash Javedkar, requesting that the OTT programme be banned or stopped immediately.
While the protests continue, we’ve learned that Samantha Akkineni has been placed under a gag order by Amazon Prime Video, preventing her from speaking about the show. “There are always objections to particular characters or depictions in films or television shows; this is because the viewer is only shown a small portion of what to expect, which may look a certain way.
Samantha Akkineni shared her delight at being a part of The Family Man season 2 in an interview with Bollywood Hungama. “I’m simply grateful to be here and a part of The Family Man since that’s all everybody asks me about back home. ‘When is the family man going to be released?’ “I am very honoured to be a part of this team and to be a part of this show, especially in such a dream role,” she said.
The show’s directors, Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, have indicated that they were particularly conscious of the sensitivities of the Tamil people and Tamil culture when writing the script for the programme. In fact, the duo has asked that people watch the episode when it premieres before drawing assumptions about the characters.
