The UDF came out with its ‘trump card‘ for the Assembly elections on Saturday, releasing the draft of the Sabarimala legislation that will be enacted if it comes to power.
The draft proposes entry restrictions with the permission of the temple tantri. Violation of rituals can attract imprisonment of up to two years, it says. The draft which has been prepared by former Director General of Prosecution Asaf Ali was released by senior Congress MLA Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan in Kottayam on Saturday.
Thiruvanchoor while releasing the draft legislation informed that the UDF government will bring in legislation to protect the interests of Sabarimala devotees and safeguard the rituals and traditions. He urged the LDF government to reveal the steps they had taken following the Supreme Court allowing women of all ages to enter the Sabarimala temple.
He told The New Indian Express that the latest move to bring out the draft legislation is the trump card of the UDF ahead of the state going to the polls in less than three months.
“The LDF government has been dilly dallying on the Sabarimala legislation where they keep claiming that since the matter is before the Supreme Court, they cannot do anything. In reality, since this comes under the concurrent list, the state government can definitely intervene,” said Thiruvanchoor.
He also maintained that the state government can override the Supreme Court verdict only by bringing in a new legislation.
The BJP leadership has already criticised the UDF draft, saying that it’s just a political move ahead of the elections.
