Stan Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, has withdrawn from Wimbledon owing to a foot issue that has also forced him to withdraw from the present French Open, according to the ATP. He hasn’t competed on the ATP Tour since losing in the first round of the Qatar Open against Lloyd Harris in March.
Wimbledon, which begins on June 28, is the only Grand Slam that the Swiss, who have reached the quarterfinals thrice, have yet to win. Wawrinka won the Australian Open in 2014, followed by the French Open in 2015 and the US Open in 2016. He is now ranked 24th in the world.
Wawrinka, the former world number three, had surgery on his left foot earlier this year. The 36-year-old Swiss has not competed on the ATP Tour since losing in the first round of the Qatar Open to Lloyd Harris in March. The tennis tournament at Wimbledon begins on June 28.
