The Union Health Ministry has agreed to reserve 30 crore COVID-19 vaccine doses from Hyderabad-based vaccine maker Biological-E in exchange for a Rs 1500 crore advance payment.
Biological-E will manufacture and stockpile these vaccine doses from August through December this year, according to a government statement released on Thursday. After exhibiting excellent results in phase 1 and 2 studies, Biological-COVID-19 E’s vaccine is currently in phase 3 clinical studies.
The RBD protein sub-unit vaccine being developed by Biological-E is expected to be available in the coming months. The National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for COVID-19 (NEGVAC) reviewed Biological-request E’s and recommended approval following due diligence, according to the statement.
The Centre has funded the Biological-E COVID vaccine candidate from preclinical through phase 3 trials.
