National award-winning cinematographer and director Sivan died at his residence in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on June 24 due to cardiac arrest. He was 89.
It’s with great sadness that I share with you all the tragic news that my father breathed his last today. He was our inspiration and role model. What he accomplished was achieved through hard work, dedication, discipline and foresight. Love you Dad for everything and I am sure you will be watching over us from your place among the clouds and stars,’’ his son and director Sangeeth Sivan posted on Facebook.
His funeral and last rites are expected to be performed today.
Sangeeth Sivan also took to Twitter to share two throwback photos and penned a heartfelt gratitute note for his father. He wrote, “Thank you Dad for everything! Difficult to imagine a world without you but we will continue to trudge d path you have paved for us, safe in d knowledge that u would b guiding us from your place in the clouds & stars. Forever indebted. #OmShanthi #Sivan (sic).”
Sivan was born to Gopalapillai and Bhavaniamma of Padeettathil house in Harippad. He was the second amongst their six children. In the beginning, he was the first government press photographer in Travancore and later associated with Malayalam film industry emerging as one of the celebrated cinematographers and directors in the Malayalam movie industry.
His sons, Santosh Sivan, Sangeeth Sivan and Sanjeev Sivan, are notable celebrities in the film industry.
