West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Wednesday that the rough weather conditions brought on by cyclone ‘Yaas’ have affected at least one crore people and damaged three lakh homes.
She claimed that one person died “accidentally” while out fishing. Banerjee warned people that the high tide in the seas caused by the storm surge would continue. Cyclone ‘Yaas’ made its landfall on Wednesday morning near Dhamra port in Odisha, at 130-140 kmph, gusting to 155 kmph, according to Doppler radar data.
“I will soon be undertaking an aerial survey of the affected areas in Purba Medinipur, South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas districts,” CM Mamata Banerjee said. According to her, a total of 15,04,506 people have been evacuated from the state’s most vulnerable areas and relocated to safer areas. She also said that they would be conducting field surveys to get a final estimate within 72 hours to get a clearer idea.
