On the microblogging site Twitter, a video of Meena Kumari, a member of the Uttar Pradesh state women commission, blaming mobile phones for rape is making the rounds. Kumari can be seen in the video replying to a query on the state’s escalating rape cases by blaming the surge in crime against women on the broader degeneration of values, which includes the increased usage of mobile phones.
“Girls should always be on the lookout for predators. It should be verified where they are going and with whom they are going “Kumari was seen stating in a video published by the Congress’s national convener, Ruchira Chaturvedi. “Mobile phones should not be handed to them. They converse on the phone before eloping for marriage “she continued.
“Meena Kumari, Member, UP Women Commission, remarked in answer to a question about the increased number of rape cases. “Mobile phones should not be handed to girls. They converse on the phone and then elope,” Chaturvedi tweeted. “So after Chowmein and jeans, now mobile phones are to blame for rape.”
The video was also shared by Swati Maliwal, the chair of the Delhi Commission of Women. “The reason for rape is such a bad mentality,” she said in the video, addressing Kumari. “No, ma’am, having a phone in a girl’s hand isn’t grounds for rape. The reason for rape is that criminals have such a horrible mentality, which boosts their morale. The Prime Minister is being asked to educate all women’s commissions, and to send them to view the Delhi Women’s Commission’s working style, which we will teach them!” Maliwal’s tweet was written in Hindi.
