Ziona Chana the head of the largest family in the world passed away on June 13, leaving behind 38 wives, 89 children and 36 grandchildren.
He was a resident of Mizoram’s Baktawng Tlangnuam village. He was living with his family in a large four-storied house called ‘Chhuan Thar Run’ (New Generation Home) with over 100 rooms.
Chana reportedly suffered from diabetes and hypertension. He was admitted to hospital on June 13 evening, where he was declared dead on arrival.
The news was confirmed by Mizoram’s chief minister, Zoramthanga, who offered his condolences on Twitter.
Zoramthanga tweeted,”With heavy heart, #Mizoram bid farewell to Mr. Zion-a (76), believed to head the world’s largest family, with 38 wives and 89 children.Mizoram and his village at Baktawng Tlangnuam has become a major tourist attraction in the state because of the family.Rest in Peace Sir!
Ziona Chana, was the head of Chana pawl, a minor Christian sect formed in 1942 in Mizoram by his father.
Chana featured in Ripley’s Believe It or Not in 2011 and 2013 for having the world’s largest family. In 2014, the family even featured in an advertisement of a leading dishwashing brand.
