The Mumbai Police on June 22 named Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami as an accused in the alleged Television Rating Points (TRP) rigging case in its second chargesheet filed before a court.
The supplementary charge-sheet also included other names – Chief financial officer Shiva Subramanyam, Priya Mukherji , Shivendra Mundherkar, Amit Dave, Sanjay Verma and Ranjit Waltkar.
The TRP scam came to light in October last year when the rating agency Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) filed a complaint through Hansa Research Group (HRG), alleging that certain television channels were rigging TRP numbers.
According to former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh, the channels were manipulating TRPs by allegedly bribing Partho Dasgupta, the former chief executive officer (CEO) of Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC), to ramp up their viewership.
“Among others, Goswami and ARG Outlier have been named as accused in the chargesheet,” lawyer of the senior journalist said.
The Mumbai police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) has arrested 13 people in connection with the case, including 12 persons including Hansa employees and the Republic channel distribution head Ghanshyam Singh.
